votes for women

While doing some mind-numbing work, I came across one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a while: a New York Times article from 1955, celebrating the ratification of the nineteenth amendment 35 years earlier.

I don’t know what I like best: the carefully crafted punny lede, the mention of Anna Howard Shaw, the turns of phrase (“fiery, though ladylike”; “vivacious young socialites”) — I love the whole thing.

And I’m happy to be reminded of the many little and big ways in which women (and “fiery, though ladylike” newspaper reporters) have changed the world. We’re clearly soldiers in petticoats — womankind, arise!
